Chapter Thirty-Five
Tyra and I spent the afternoon digging a pit with a flat bottom. We discussed the dimensions of the habitat, but otherwise, we passed the afternoon in blissful, uneventful silence. Under different circumstances, the quiet might have been awkward, but in this case, I found it comforting.
My irascible skin burned. The quills had done a hell of a number on me. The liquid bandage tempered most of the aches, but no matter how much I scratched, I couldn't reach the deeper itch taunting me from just beneath the surface of my skin. The cuts welled and turned red. Those evil plants and their hornet-inspired needles must have been coated with toxin. Iâd probably wake up in the morning with a third eye.
I should take a flamethrower and torch the whole damn hedge.
A couple of times, Iâd caught Tyra watching as I contorted to claw at my maddeningly irritated flesh. Did she feel any guilt at all for the things sheâd done to me? Or had the person sheâd becomeâa captive to the bots, a Borgerâburned out all her pleasant human emotions...assuming sheâd been born with any in the first place?
Instead of discussing her dead, rotting soul, we dug, keeping our thoughts to ourselves.
Two Borgers and their gearâmostly consisting of Tyraâs warrior cache of weaponryârequired a coliseumâs worth of space. We hauled the dirt out of camp, dumping it deep in the woods so as not to advertise our underground shelter.
As the failing sunlight fled and the plants donned their evening cloaks, Tyra pulled a cube from a compartment on her leg. Our habitat hummed to life. She hit a button, inverting the dome.
As if by sorcery, the sonic planes molded to the walls and floor of the hole and created a flat roof, level with the ground.
Tyra dragged her clawed metal foot in front of the entrance, gouging a thin line in the dirt. She accessed a menu labeled Camouflage and made some adjustments. The habitat shimmered as its color and pattern changed to match the surrounding terrain, creating a contiguous forest floor. We covered the roof with forest debris to give it texture.
I circled the area, searching for any signs that our habitat had replaced the ground, but could find none. I walked across the top of it, jumping up and down a few times to see if I could detect any noticeable differences.
Tyra knelt in front of the line. She hit a button on the controller creating a âsoft spotâ in the top of the igloo for entering and exiting. She pressed her face to the ground as though sniffing pine needles and mulch. The surface of the dome undulated and curtained open, allowing her entrance. She crawled inside, standing waist deep in the labia-like slit.
I handed her the supply crates and followed.

A celestial hololantern hovered near the ceiling, filling the habitat with a gentle luminescent glow. Because we would only be spending a single night before heading out on our mission, we hadnât bothered to dig deep enough so we could stand.
